Thyssenkrupp to switch to hydrogen-based steel production by 2050

German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp plans to phase out CO₂-intensive coke-based steel production and replace it with a hydrogen-based process by 2050, . “It is industry’s job to ensure it’s doing share for climate protection,” Andreas Goss, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG, told Handelsblatt. He said the company had a “timetable for switching to hydrogen-based steel production” and wants to invest 10 billion euros over the next 30 years in modernising production processes and replacing coke. Steel production is responsible for almost a third of greenhouse gas emissions from German industry, Handelsblatt says.
