Long-time rivals BMW and Daimler are considering joining forces on autonomous driving, . The premium carmakers hope to cut billions of euros in development costs and establish common industry standards in order to beat new rivals like Uber and Alphabet-subsidiary Waymo. But high-ranking managers told the paper talks were still in the early stages.
Autonomous driving is considered among the most serious threats to established carmakers, alongside electrification and new mobility services. Last week, VW announced a collaboration with Ford on electric and self-drive technology. BMW and Daimler recently merged their car-sharing services “Car2Go” and “Drive Now.”
