Germany’s long-time Chancellor, Angela Merkel, will leave her successor a long list of unsolved tasks once she leaves office, which will happen in 2021 the latest, Alessandro Speciale and Jana Randow write for Bloomberg. In energy policy, the accelerated nuclear exit in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster has increased Germany’s reliance on coal, even though renewable energy sources have been expanding rapidly. “The result: Germany has the highest electricity prices in Europe from heavily subsidised solar and wind power, is increasing its dependence on Russian gas, and will need to import coal for decades to come after shutting down its last deep-shaft mine.”
